8 Days Lemosho Route
Trip Overview
Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climbing is a relatively recent route that is marginally longer and more costly but definitely more secluded and stunning. It was created as an alternative to the Shira route and starts at the Londorossi Gate on the western side of the mountain, a longer drive from town.
On the third day, it traverses the Shira Plateau to join the Machame Route at Lava Tower. From there, it descends to Barranco Valley by way of the Southern Circuit. If you’re lucky, you might get to witness an elephant, buffalo, or other wildlife. Because this Kilimanjaro climbing route gives more time for acclimatisation, it has a greater summit success rate.

You may take in the breathtaking rainforest landscape and winding trails while your guide teaches you about the area flora, fauna, and wildlife. At these lower elevations, the trail can become muddy and treacherous. It is strongly advised to bring hiking poles and gaiters here.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Following a satisfying night’s sleep and a substantial breakfast, we depart from the rain forest and proceed along an inclining route. To get to the Shira Plateau’s rim, the trail progressively climbs while offering expansive views. The temperature begins to drop.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira Hut:
On this Kilimanjaro Climb, we explore the Shira plateau for the whole day. Shira 2 camp, which is situated on moorland meadows by a stream, is reached after a leisurely stroll eastward towards Kibo’s glacier-capped peak and across the plateau.
Next we head to Moir Hut, a seldom-visited spot at the foot of the Lent Hills. Lent Hills is a great place to acclimatise because it has a variety of treks. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on Earth.
Day 4: Shira Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
This is a crucial day for acclimatisation even though you finish the day at about the same elevation as you began. From the Shira Plateau, we head east along a ridge, crossing the intersection heading towards the Kibo mountain before veering southeast in the direction of the Lava Tower.
Not far from the tower, we come to another crossroads that goes to the Arrow Glacier. After that, we keep going downhill to Barranco Camp, where we will stay the night.
Day 5 Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, we head up a steep ridge to the thrilling Barranco Wall, which leads to the Karanga Valley and the intersection with the Mweka Trail. Witnessing your crew’s strength, power, and agility seemingly effortlessly whiz over this wall is one of the most amazing days. Spend your evening in Karanga Camp.
Day 6: Hike Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After completing the South Circuit, which offers amazing views of the peak from several perspectives, we continue on towards Barafu Camp. On summit night, we’ll eat early and get plenty of rest. Spend the night at the Camp Barafu.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp
The excitement grows as the morning approaches, with a start time of between midnight and 2 a.m. This is the most physically and mentally taxing part of the journey.
We keep climbing between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, trying to stay warm while focusing on the incredible sense of accomplishment that awaits us. Ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim in a northwesterly direction using a switchback motion. You will be rewarded with a spectacular sunrise during your brief stay here. The sunrise may be visible from the summit for faster hikers. On your final 1-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak, you will almost certainly encounter snow.
You have now reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent as a whole! After photos, celebrations, and possibly a few tears of joy, we take a few moments to enjoy this incredible achievement. We start our ascent to Mweka Camp, pausing for lunch and a short rest at Barafu.
We strongly recommend gaiters and trekking poles for uncooperative loose gravel and volcano ash terrain. Enjoy some well-deserved rest on your final evening on the mountain. Mweka Camp is where you’ll spend the night.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
It’s time to say farewell after breakfast and a moving ritual of gratitude and team building with your staff. We go to the Mweka Park Gate to retrieve your summit credentials following your successful ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The terrain is steep, muddy, and damp due to the warmer weather; gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended. You will be picked up by a car in Mweka village and driven back to your Moshi/Arusha accommodation.
